The annual Amarnath Yatra faced suspension from the Baltal route on Friday, July 28, 2023, due to adverse weather conditions and necessary repair work on the trekking path, officials confirmed. The move comes as heavy rains battered the region, affecting the safety of the pilgrims.
Earlier on Thursday night, the Baltal area experienced torrential rains that led to a minor flash flood in a specific location. Fortunately, authorities reported no loss of life or property damage, which ensured the safety of the pilgrims. However, due to the harsh weather conditions and ongoing repairs, no devotees could proceed toward the sacred cave shrine.
The annual pilgrimage, which began on July 3, has seen nearly 4.5 lakh devotees pay homage at the cave shrine that hosts the naturally formed ice lingam. Officials have emphasized the importance of safety during this pilgrimage season. The yatra is scheduled to conclude on August 28, coinciding with Raksha Bandhan.
Thus far, authorities have suspended the yatra from the Pahalgam route as well, highlighting the need for repairs across both paths leading to the shrine. Current repair work continues, with officials cautiously optimistic about resuming the pilgrimage in safer conditions.
With weather forecasts predicting further rainfall, officials urge all pilgrims to stay updated on the situation and prioritize their safety while planning their journey to the Amarnath cave. The government remains dedicated to ensuring a smooth and safe pilgrimage for all participants.
