Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) protested in the Parliament House complex on Tuesday against the alleged theft of donations meant for the Ram temple in Ayodhya and police actions against student protesters. The demonstration included prominent leaders like Congress’ Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who voiced her concerns alongside various other political figures.
With placards raised high, the MPs protested in front of Makar Dwar, chanting slogans such as ‘chhanda chor, gaddi chor’ and demanding answers from Home Minister Amit Shah. The demonstration showcased their discontent especially against the backdrop of rising tensions regarding the temple’s funds.
As part of their protest, MPs symbolically placed donation boxes at the site to represent the purported theft at the Ram temple. They lined up around these boxes, raising awareness on the matter through collective chants. In an act of solidarity, several MPs deposited cash into the boxes, symbolizing the donations made initially and the subsequent misappropriation the protest aimed to highlight.
Among those participating in the rally were SP’s Dimple Yadav and Dharmendra Yadav, TMC’s Sagarika Ghose, RJD’s Sanjay Yadav and Manoj Jha, and RSP’s NK Premchandran. Each of these individuals joined in the unified message against the government, questioning the absence of Amit Shah from Parliament.
The leaders pushed the narrative that the current government has mishandled issues related to state affairs, especially concerning the management of funds intended for the Ram temple. They expressed their distress regarding the alleged theft, insisting that the matter deserved immediate parliamentary attention.
The protest unfolded in the larger context of rising discontent regarding police actions in response to student demonstrations that took place last week. The INDIA bloc, comprising several opposition parties, stands firm in its commitment to confront the government about what they term as “police excesses” against peaceful demonstrations.
During an earlier meeting, floor leaders from the INDIA bloc convened in the chamber of Rajya Sabha Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge. They strategized to confront the ruling party regarding the twin issues of “chhanda chori” and the reported violent suppression faced by student protesters.
Echoing sentiments from various student bodies, the leaders underscored the necessity for accountability from the government. They criticized what they described as systemic injustices faced by young demonstrators who merely wished to express their concerns regarding educational and social issues.
Lawmakers like Priyanka Gandhi are capitalizing on these sentiments to garner broader support not just from opposition ranks but also from the public, reinforcing the importance of transparency and accountability within the government.
