“Siraj’s Turnaround: A Chat with Bumrah Inspires Stellar Performance in Perth”

Canberra, Dec 2: Mohammed Siraj has bounced back in style, making an essential contribution to India’s dominant 295-run win in the Perth Test, claiming five wickets. The 30-year-old pacer, who faced a tough home season earlier this year with just two wickets in two Tests during India’s 0-3 loss to New Zealand, credited his senior bowling colleague and India’s spearhead, Jasprit Bumrah, for helping him regain his confidence and form.

A Conversation with Bumrah Sparks the Revival
In a heartening revelation, Siraj revealed that his rejuvenation began with a chat with Bumrah, the No.1 ranked Test bowler, prior to India’s tour to Australia. “I always keep talking to Jassi bhai,” Siraj said, speaking after India’s six-wicket win against Australia’s Prime Minister’s XI in a practice match. “Before the first Test, I was going through a tough phase, and I shared my feelings with him. He told me one thing — don’t chase wickets, just focus on consistently bowling in one area, and enjoy the process. If wickets don’t come, then you come talk to me.”

Following Bumrah’s advice, Siraj was able to get back into his groove, and his focus on the basics paid off. “I enjoyed my bowling and got wickets as well,” Siraj added, acknowledging that simple adjustments to his mindset helped him excel.

Support from Bharat Arun and Morne Morkel
Siraj also sought guidance from former India bowling coach Bharat Arun, who has been a key mentor in his career. “I spoke to Bharat Arun sir about what I was going through, and he said the same thing – enjoy your bowling, don’t chase wickets, they will come,” Siraj shared.

Furthermore, India’s current bowling coach Morne Morkel has also been a source of encouragement. “Morne keeps telling me, ‘You are a warrior, just keep enjoying your bowling and the wickets will come,’” Siraj said with a smile.

Warm-up Match Success
In the practice match against the Prime Minister’s XI, Siraj showed great rhythm and bowled with intent, claiming the prized scalp of former Australian Test batter Matthew Renshaw. “It felt good to be back in rhythm, especially with the pink ball,” Siraj commented, highlighting the different feel and challenges that come with using a synthetic ball.

Pink Ball Debut: Preparing for the Day-Night Challenge
As India gears up for the second Test in Adelaide — a day-night affair — Siraj will experience his first pink-ball Test under lights. Talking about his preparations, he observed, “The pink ball has a different feel to it. It’s brighter and larger, with a harder seam. The more you practice with it, the better you understand how to use it.”

He further shared his insights about the ball’s behavior, particularly under the lights. “With the pink ball, it’s better to bowl back of length. Pitching it up doesn’t generate much swing, but if you focus on hitting the deck and getting it to seam, it works better for us,” Siraj explained. While he has yet to bowl with the pink ball under lights, he’s keen to practice and refine his approach before the Adelaide Test.

A Confident Siraj Looks Ahead
After a difficult period earlier in the year, Siraj’s resurgence has been one of the highlights of India’s tour to Australia. With the second Test fast approaching, the fast bowler is focused on continuing his fine form and helping India extend their lead in the series.

“We’ve been working hard as a team,” Siraj concluded, “and I’m excited to bowl under the lights in Adelaide. We just need to keep our focus and enjoy our cricket.”
