A family court in Bandra on Thursday granted a decree of divorce to cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal and his estranged wife, Dhanashree Verma, following their joint plea for separation by mutual consent.

Both Chahal and Verma appeared before the court, which accepted their petition after noting compliance with the consent terms. Chahal’s advocate, Nitin Gupta, confirmed the court’s decision, stating, “The family court has accepted the joint petition filed by Chahal and Verma seeking divorce by mutual consent.”

The couple, who tied the knot in December 2020, had been living separately since June 2022. They officially filed for divorce on February 5, 2024.

High Court Waives Cooling-Off Period

On Wednesday, the Bombay High Court directed the family court to expedite the divorce proceedings, considering Chahal’s participation in the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), which begins on March 22. Chahal, a leg-spinner, is part of the Punjab Kings squad.

Additionally, the high court waived the mandatory six-month cooling-off period under the Hindu Marriage Act, following a joint request from Chahal and Verma. Their plea argued that reconciliation was not possible, and the cooling-off period was unnecessary in their case.

Initially, the family court had declined to waive the period, citing incomplete compliance with the consent terms, which included a financial settlement of ₹4.75 crore from Chahal to Verma. At the time, Chahal had paid ₹2.37 crore. However, the high court ruled on Wednesday that the settlement terms were fulfilled, as the remaining amount was due only after the divorce decree was granted.

With the legal process now concluded, both Chahal and Verma have officially parted ways, marking the end of their three-year marriage.
