President Donald Trump has paused the military operation known as Project Freedom, originally aimed at escorting ships through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. The suspension relates to progress in negotiations with Iran regarding a potential agreement to end the ongoing conflict.
In a statement shared on Truth Social, Trump declared, “Great progress has been made toward a complete and final agreement with representatives of Iran.” He emphasized that this decision arises from requests made by Pakistan and other countries in light of military operations that demonstrated significant success against Iran.
Trump continued, noting, “While the blockade will remain in full force and effect, Project Freedom will be paused temporarily to determine if the agreement can be finalized and signed.” This operation commenced on Monday, following Trump’s announcement on Sunday, and was set to ensure the safety of ships stranded due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
The Strait of Hormuz serves as a critical shipping lane, accounting for about one-fifth of global oil supplies. Recent tensions in this area have intensified, with reports of Iranian attacks on ships and U.S. forces destroying several Iranian minor vessels.
Trump’s announcement coincided with remarks from U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who stated that Operation Epic Fury, initiated on February 28, had concluded successfully, achieving its operational goals. “We achieved the objectives of that operation. We’re not cheering for an additional situation to occur. We would prefer the path of peace,” Rubio said, highlighting the desire for diplomatic resolution.
On the topic of Project Freedom, Rubio explained that it aimed to assist approximately 23,000 civilians from 87 countries who found themselves stranded in the Persian Gulf. He clarified that the operation was defensive in nature, stating, “This is not an offensive operation. There’s no shooting unless we’re shot at first.” Rubio reassured the public that while the U.S. was not initiating attacks, it would respond to any aggression.
The situation in the Persian Gulf remains precarious, with U.S. officials emphasizing the importance of diplomatic efforts while maintaining operational readiness. As Project Freedom remains paused, both diplomats and military leaders will closely monitor the developments to ensure the safety of all vessels and civilians involved.
