Third-year students Samaira Sinha and Rishabh Kumar of the School of Civil Engineering, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU), recently made a significant mark at the 29th International Conference on Hydraulics, Water Resources, River, and Coastal Engineering.

The prestigious event, organized by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, took place at the Central Water and Power Research Station (CWPRS) in Pune. Among the esteemed gathering of researchers, industry experts, and academicians, Samaira and Rishabh stood out with their pioneering work on bridge pier scour depth.

Innovative Research Paper:

Their research paper, titled “Modeling of Bridge Pier Scour Depth by Using HEC-RAS,” delves into the cutting-edge application of the Hydrologic Engineering Center’s River Analysis System (HEC-RAS). Developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, HEC-RAS is a state-of-the-art software tool that enables precise simulations of river hydraulics, sediment transport, and scour depth. By utilizing this advanced system, the duo has tackled one of the most critical challenges in bridge design and maintenance.

Contribution to Safer Infrastructure:

Their research is poised to have far-reaching implications for the design and maintenance of bridges, enhancing safety and resilience. Scour depth, which refers to the erosion of riverbed material around bridge piers due to water flow, is a significant cause of bridge failure worldwide. By developing a more accurate model to predict scour depth, their work contributes to preventing costly and catastrophic failures, thereby enhancing the longevity and safety of critical infrastructure.

A Step Forward in Civil Engineering:

Samaira and Rishabh’s participation in this prestigious international conference reflects the cutting-edge research and academic excellence being nurtured at SMVDU. Their achievement underscores the growing global presence of the university’s civil engineering program and its focus on addressing pressing engineering challenges through innovative solutions.

Looking Ahead:

Both students are optimistic that their research will contribute significantly to the ongoing efforts to improve bridge safety standards, and they are excited to continue their work in the field of civil engineering. This recognition also paves the way for further academic collaborations, research opportunities, and potential real-world applications of their findings.

The SMVDU community is immensely proud of Samaira and Rishabh for their exceptional contributions to the field of civil engineering.
