Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah dominated the first day of the Test against West Indies, dismissing the opposition for a mere 162 runs at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday. Siraj took 4 wickets for 40 runs, while Bumrah added 3 wickets for 32 runs as India delivered a stunning bowling performance.

Siraj led the attack with a fiery morning spell, securing three early wickets and returning post-lunch to complete his four-wicket haul. Bumrah, known for his lethal yorkers, provided exquisite support, complementing Siraj’s aggression. Kuldeep Yadav added 2 wickets for 25 runs, while Washington Sundar dismissed a batsman for just 9 runs, contributing to another dismal batting show from the Windies.

Among the West Indies batsmen, Justin Greaves stood out with a resilient 32 runs, alongside Shai Hope with 26 and climactic contributions from skipper Roston Chase with 24 runs. Despite their efforts, the team struggled against India’s relentless attack.

In a response tinged with early uncertainty, India managed to close Day 1 at 121 for 2. The highlight came from KL Rahul, who skillfully navigated the innings, ending the day with an unbeaten 53 runs off 114 balls. Shubman Gill lent support with a steady 18* as the pair established a partnership.

Though India faced a brief interruption due to rain, it failed to derail their momentum. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal made a quickfire 36 runs before succumbing to a delivery from Jayden Seales. The debutant, B Sai Sudharsan, was less fortunate, falling cheaply for just 7 runs.

Rahul’s steadfast performance underlined his experience, bringing confidence to the Indian side. Overcoming the early wobble, his diligent play allowed India to regain control, eyeing a strong position going into Day 2.

With their bowlers setting a formidable target, India aims to dominate the two-Test series, taking advantage of the conditions and the West Indies’ batting fragilities.
