Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed’s social media remarks fat-shaming Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma sparked a major controversy on Monday, drawing criticism from cricket fans, political leaders, and even her own party.

In now-deleted posts, Mohamed commented that Sharma was “fat for a sportsman” and called him “the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had.” Her remarks came amid India’s undefeated run in the ongoing Champions Trophy, with a crucial semi-final against Australia set for Tuesday.

Backlash from Political and Sporting Circles

The comments were met with widespread condemnation, with Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya calling them “deeply shameful and outright pathetic.”

The BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia termed the remarks “very unfortunate” and warned that such statements could demoralize the team.

Congress Distances Itself

Following the backlash, the Congress party distanced itself from Mohamed’s remarks. Pawan Khera, head of Congress’ media and publicity department, stated that the party respects sporting icons and does not endorse such statements. Mohamed was asked to delete her posts and exercise caution in the future.

However, Mohamed defended her comments, claiming they were her personal opinion and not reflective of the Congress party’s stance.

“I was only talking about fitness. Why make an issue out of it?” she told reporters.

TMC, BJP Leaders Join the Debate

TMC leader Saugata Roy supported Mohamed’s criticism of Rohit Sharma, stating that he should be dropped from the team due to poor performances.

BJP’s Amit Malviya accused the Congress of trying to undermine Team India’s morale at a crucial time, while Shehzad Poonawalla mocked the Congress, stating, “Those who have lost 90 elections under Rahul Gandhi are calling Rohit Sharma unimpressive!”

Former cricketer Venkatesh Prasad also slammed Mohamed, saying Sharma has led India with dignity and success and body-shaming him was “pathetic and uncalled for.”

Despite the controversy, many fans and supporters continue to back Rohit Sharma, emphasizing his strong leadership and commitment to Indian cricket.
