On October 15, 2023, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah inaugurated the newly constructed Gulmarg Convention Centre, envisioning it as a hub for international events, similar to Davos. This world-class facility, built at a cost of Rs 21 crore by NBCC, aims to transition Gulmarg into a leading destination for conferences, promoting tourism, culture, and business convergence in Jammu and Kashmir.
During the inauguration ceremony, attended by various dignitaries including Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani and MLA Gulmarg Pirzada Farooq A Shah, Abdullah emphasized the significance of utilizing the new Centre effectively to achieve its intended purpose.
Boosting Tourism and International Business
“Constructing physical infrastructure is just one part of the equation,” Abdullah stated. “Maintaining and making meaningful use of these facilities is where the real responsibility lies.” He reiterated the need for essential furnishings that were not included in the original project plan, ensuring the Centre’s readiness for immediate use.
The Chief Minister’s vision also includes positioning the Gulmarg Convention Centre as a prime MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) tourism location aimed at attracting high-profile events and weddings. “We aim to link the Centre with the marketing network of SKICC to broaden its exposure,” he added.
Creating Vibrant Evening Experiences
Omar Abdullah highlighted the need to enhance recreational opportunities for tourists during the evenings, especially during winter. “Currently, after skiing and sightseeing, tourists have few options for evening entertainment,” he noted.
He proposed the addition of amenities such as a coffee shop, restaurant, and digital cinema to create a lively atmosphere, ensuring tourists can enjoy engaging activities and generate additional revenue for the region.
Utilization for Government Programs
The Chief Minister encouraged various government departments to utilize the Gulmarg Convention Centre for training and official meetings, promoting the facility’s comprehensive use until private sector interest builds. “This Centre can serve multiple purposes, ensuring it’s active and beneficial for various sectors, including education and health,” he expressed.
In response to concerns about initial operations, he stated that potential users should take advantage of the space for programs, aiding in its continued engagement with the local and international community.
A Landmark Addition to Gulmarg’s Appeal
Abdullah congratulated NBCC and the Gulmarg Development Authority for their efforts in delivering such a crucial project. “With effective management and a strong marketing strategy, the Gulmarg Convention Centre could not only host international conferences but also foster recreational and cultural tourism,” he concluded.
This ambitious project marks a significant milestone for Gulmarg, as it aims to enhance local tourism and position itself as a key player on the international stage.
