New Zealand Rest Key Players for Pakistan T20I Series Ahead of IPL

New Zealand has opted to rest most of their T20 regulars for the upcoming five-match home series against Pakistan, with the Indian Premier League (IPL) around the corner. The series is set to commence on March 16, just days before the IPL begins on March 22.

Michael Bracewell will lead the Black Caps in the absence of white-ball skipper Mitchell Santner. Bracewell was a key performer for New Zealand in the recently concluded Champions Trophy, where the Kiwis lost the final to India.

Key Absences and Squad Changes

Several top players, including Devon Conway, Lockie Ferguson, Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, and Santner, were unavailable for selection due to IPL commitments. Kane Williamson also ruled himself out of contention, while Bevon Jacobs, part of the recent T20I squad against Sri Lanka, was also unavailable.

To manage workload, pacers Kyle Jamieson and Will O’Rourke have been selected only for the first three games, while Matt Henry, the leading wicket-taker of the Champions Trophy, will join the squad for the final two matches—subject to further fitness assessment.

Selectors’ Perspective

New Zealand selector Sam Wells emphasized that this series holds significance in the team’s preparations for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in India.

“We made it clear in our planning and communication with players that availability for the World Cup build-up was required to be considered for this series,” Wells said.
“Half of this squad is only returning from the Champions Trophy on Wednesday, so managing player workloads will be crucial.”

New Zealand Squad for Pakistan T20Is

  • Michael Bracewell (c), Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes (games 4 & 5), Mitch Hay, Matt Henry (games 4 & 5), Kyle Jamieson (games 1, 2 & 3), Daryl Mitchell, Jimmy Neesham, Will O’Rourke (games 1, 2 & 3), Tim Robinson, Ben Sears, Tim Seifert, Ish Sodhi.

The series promises to be a crucial testing ground for New Zealand as they begin shaping their squad for next year’s global event.
