External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has called for stronger solidarity among Global South nations at a High-Level Meeting during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday. He emphasized a collective effort towards reforming global institutions to better address the diverse challenges faced by developing countries.
During the meeting, held on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Jaishankar noted that the proliferation of global concerns necessitates increased multilateral cooperation. He stated, “It is natural that the Global South turns to multilateralism for solutions.”
Jaishankar outlined a structured approach for enhancing the voice and influence of the Global South in international affairs. He presented five key proposals focused on strengthening collaboration among developing nations.
He stressed the necessity of leveraging existing forums to foster consultations aimed at encouraging solidarity. “We must work together to enhance collaboration,” he urged. This collective effort aims to ensure that the unique challenges of the Global South are acknowledged and effectively addressed in reforms.
On the agenda for discussion was the urgent need for comprehensive reforms of the United Nations and multilateral structures as a whole. Jaishankar pointed out that the Global South should bring its strengths and achievements to the international arena. He cited crucial areas like vaccines, digital capabilities, educational resources, agro-practices, and support for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) as examples of how developing nations can contribute.
In his remarks, he highlighted the need for an equitable approach to global challenges, particularly in the domains of climate action and justice. “The Global South must champion initiatives that serve its interests, rather than simply aligning with the Global North,” he asserted, emphasizing a tailored strategy for climate initiatives.
Additionally, Jaishankar addressed the significance of engaging with emerging technologies, especially artificial intelligence, to prevent developing countries from being left behind in the rapidly evolving global order. He called for proactive measures to ensure that these nations can harness technological advancements for their growth.
India’s consistent advocacy for the Global South in international platforms showcases its commitment to empowering these nations. By reinforcing their presence and influence globally, India aims to facilitate a more balanced and inclusive approach to international policymaking.
As the discussions at the UN progress, the collective voice of the Global South remains critical to shaping a fairer global agenda that truly reflects the aspirations and needs of developing nations.
