AI to Combat Mule Accounts

  • The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, announced that the government is planning to deploy Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify ‘mule’ accounts that cyber fraudsters use to park swindled funds. This initiative is aimed at strengthening the country’s fight against cybercrime.

: Efforts and Achievements in Cybercrime Prevention

  • In a significant update, Shah revealed that 805 apps and 3,266 website links were blocked based on the recommendations of the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C).
  • More than 19 lakh mule accounts have been identified, and suspicious transactions worth Rs 2,038 crore have been prevented, showcasing the effectiveness of the government’s ongoing efforts.

: Cybersecurity and Digital Infrastructure

  • The article delves into how India’s expanding digital infrastructure has led to an increase in cybercrime. With 95% of villages digitally connected and the massive rise in UPI transactions, cybercriminals have found new opportunities to exploit vulnerabilities in the system.
  • Shah acknowledged the government’s initiatives in promoting digital literacy, urging citizens to follow Prime Minister Modi’s mantra ‘STOP-THINK-TAKE ACTION’ to safeguard themselves from cybercrime.

: National Security and the Digital Revolution

  • The home minister stressed that cybercrime knows no borders and remains a form of “borderless and formless” crime. He highlighted India’s “digital revolution” and its increasing role in the global digital ecosystem, with India leading 48% of the global digital transactions in 2024.
  • The digital economy’s contribution to India’s GDP has grown to 12%, while the digital startup ecosystem places India among the top three countries worldwide.

: The Future of Cybersecurity

  • Shah concluded by emphasizing that the Ministry of Home Affairs aims for a future where cybercrime cases are reduced to zero. With robust digital infrastructure and enhanced vigilance, the government is optimistic about securing the country’s cyberspace.
