In a landmark achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed a newborn weighing an impressive 6 kilograms at birth. This birth, which took place on October 25, 2025, marks one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at the institution.
The baby, born at 1:20 PM to a diabetic mother, exhibited severe respiratory distress within the first thirty minutes of life. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, medical professionals swiftly admitted the newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for urgent monitoring and advanced medical care.
Given the baby’s large-for-gestational-age status, the NICU team initiated specialized respiratory support to address the immediate needs. The care team diligently monitored various health indicators, including respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity.
Over several days, the infant showed significant improvement, leading to a gradual reduction in respiratory assistance. Remarkably, during the final seventy-two hours before discharge, the baby maintained stable independent breathing and healthy oxygen levels, experiencing no episodes of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation.
After demonstrating consistent clinical stability, the newborn was discharged in good health, with instructions for routine follow-ups. This success story highlights the expertise of the GMC Doda NICU team, particularly under the guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, the Head of Pediatrics, alongside faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma.
The incredible teamwork of senior and junior residents, along with the dedicated nursing and paramedical staff, played a crucial role in the baby’s recovery. Their vigilant monitoring, compassionate care, and commitment truly made a difference during this critical care process.
This case not only underscores the growing neonatal expertise at GMC Doda but also reflects the institution’s unwavering commitment to providing quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to its youngest patients. The team’s success showcases the hospital’s capabilities and supports the health of newborns and children across the region.
