Congress Criticizes Repressive Measures in Katra, Calls for Immediate Intervention

In a press briefing held today, the Congress Party lambasted the administration for its “repressive measures” in addressing the ongoing unrest in Katra. The party called for the immediate intervention of the Lieutenant Governor to facilitate the release of detained leaders and to create a conducive atmosphere for dialogue.

Addressing the Press

JKPCC President Tariq Hameed Karra, flanked by senior party leaders, expressed strong disapproval of the administration’s handling of the Katra situation. He accused the authorities of adopting a “repressive policy” that undermines efforts to resolve the crisis. “Detaining representatives of the protestors and subjecting them to alleged inhumane and unhygienic conditions only worsens the situation,” Karra said.

Karra was joined by Working Presidents Tara Chand and Raman Bhalla, Chief Spokesperson Ravinder Sharma, and other notable leaders, including Th Balwan Singh, Yogesh Sawhney, Ved Mahajan, SS Channi, and Namrata Sharma. They criticized the administration for blocking Congress leaders from visiting Katra, while leaders of other political parties were allowed access.

Concerns Over Stakeholders’ Treatment

The Congress leadership questioned the Shrine Board’s claims of seeking an amicable solution. “Is this the proper approach to engage stakeholders?” Karra asked, referring to the detention of local leaders who represent various aggrieved groups. “This heavy-handedness sends a wrong message and only deepens the divide.”

Karra reiterated Congress’ efforts to mediate since the unrest began on November 27. He noted that despite appeals to the Divisional Commissioner Jammu and visits by Congress delegations to Katra, the administration’s “repressive” approach has stalled progress.

Appeal to the Lieutenant Governor

The Congress party has formally approached the Lieutenant Governor, seeking his intervention to secure the release of detained leaders. “If the authorities are sincere about dialogue, they must release the detainees and address the concerns of all stakeholders,” Karra urged. The party has requested an audience with the LG to discuss the crisis and propose sending a high-powered delegation to Katra.

Impact on Livelihoods and Pilgrimage

Karra highlighted the dire implications of the unrest on local livelihoods, including Pony-walas, Pithu-walas, Palkiwalas, traders, shopkeepers, transporters, and vendors. He also expressed concern over the inconvenience caused to pilgrims visiting Katra, urging authorities to consider the religious and economic ramifications of the ongoing conflict.

Resentment Over Unfulfilled Promises

Reflecting broader discontent, Karra pointed out the unfulfilled promise of restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood, a commitment repeatedly made in public rallies and on the floor of Parliament. “The people of J&K feel betrayed once again in 2024,” he said, noting the widespread resentment across the region.

The Way Forward

The Congress party emphasized the need for a thoughtful and inclusive approach to resolving the Katra crisis. “Haste and repression will only alienate stakeholders further,” Karra warned, urging authorities to prioritize dialogue and address the legitimate concerns of all affected parties.
