CM Omar Abdullah Opposes Ban on Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s AAC, Says No Intelligence Shared

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has stated that the Centre did not share any intelligence with his government that could justify the recent ban on Mirwaiz Umar Farooq’s Awami Action Committee (AAC). He further asserted that he has never been in favor of such decisions.

The Union Government had recently imposed a five-year ban on AAC, led by the influential Kashmiri cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, along with Masroor Abbas Ansari’s Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen (IM), citing their alleged involvement in anti-national activities, support for terrorism, and secessionist movements.

‘No Prior Intelligence Shared with State Government’

Speaking to reporters after the conclusion of the fifth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games, Abdullah said, “I do not know the basis of the ban. This decision does not fall under the purview of the elected government in J&K, and no intelligence report justifying it has been shared with us.”

However, he reiterated his government’s stance, stating, “On principle, we have never supported such decisions.”

Mirwaiz’s Recent Statements Under Scrutiny

Abdullah also mentioned that since the Mirwaiz was released from house arrest, he had not made any controversial statements that could warrant such a ban. “We do not have any information about the reasons behind the decision. However, we will see what can be done in the future,” he added.

When asked whether the ban was linked to Mirwaiz’s criticism of a recently held fashion show in Gulmarg, he dismissed the speculation, saying, “You cannot say that.”

The fashion show, which took place during the holy month of Ramzan, was widely criticized, with Mirwaiz stating that “obscenity in the name of tourism promotion will not be tolerated.”

Clarifies BJP’s Allegations About Hotel Ownership

Responding to allegations from the BJP that the Gulmarg hotel where the fashion show was held belongs to his relatives, Abdullah confirmed the ownership but downplayed any controversy.

“Yes, the hotel belongs to one of my relatives, and I am not denying that. In Gulmarg, there are two hotels—Nedous and Highland Park—that belong to my family. However, I have already spoken about this in the Assembly, and I have nothing more to add,” he said.

On potential action against the fashion show organizers, the CM remarked, “If any violation of the law has taken place, then appropriate action will follow.”

‘J&K Must Improve in Winter Sports’

Referring to the Khelo India Winter Games, Abdullah expressed disappointment over Jammu and Kashmir’s performance, as the region failed to secure a position in the top three of the medal tally.

“I congratulate the Army, Himachal Pradesh, and Ladakh for their achievements. However, I deeply regret that despite skiing originating from Gulmarg, we could not finish among the top three. This highlights the need for better infrastructure and coaching for our athletes,” he said.

The Chief Minister assured that his administration would prioritize infrastructure upgrades to ensure a stronger performance in future competitions. “By next year’s Khelo India Games, I hope J&K secures a position in the top three,” he concluded
