Former Chief Minister and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday reiterated his party’s firm commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, including the restoration of Article 370.

Addressing a gathering in Budgam, Abdullah stressed that the foundation of the Jammu and Kashmir National Conference lies in the dedication of its cadre and the sacrifices of those who fought for the region’s dignity and self-respect.

Tribute to Historical Legacy

Highlighting the party’s legacy, he credited Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah for ushering in transformative reforms during the early years of democratic governance in Jammu and Kashmir. These included landmark land reforms that empowered farmers and significantly reduced poverty, deprivation, and illiteracy.

“Ordinary citizens who tilled the land without fair compensation became landowners overnight,” Abdullah said, describing the reforms as a turning point in the region’s socio-economic development.

Concerns Over Erosion of Autonomy

Abdullah expressed concern over what he described as the gradual erosion of constitutional safeguards over the years, culminating in their complete removal in 2019. He alleged that these changes were carried out in an undemocratic manner and warned against narratives that downplay their impact.

He maintained that the restoration of Article 370 remains central to the party’s political agenda and asserted that there would be no compromise on this demand.

Demand for Statehood Gains Urgency

Emphasizing governance challenges, Abdullah called for the immediate restoration of full statehood to Jammu and Kashmir. He argued that the current dual system of governance hampers effective decision-making and could lead to instability in a sensitive region.

“In a democracy, an elected government cannot be sidelined,” he said, adding that continued delays in restoring statehood are unjustified.

Reminder to the Centre

Abdullah also pointed out that assurances had been given by the central leadership regarding the restoration of statehood following elections. With more than a year and a half having passed since the formation of an elected government, he urged the Centre to honor its commitment without further delay.

He noted that the Supreme Court of India has also emphasized the need to restore statehood at the earliest.

Commitment to Public Welfare

Concluding his address, Abdullah said that the National Conference government remains focused on public welfare, with its ministers and legislators actively working to resolve grievances and provide relief to the people.

The remarks underline the party’s continued political stance on autonomy, democratic rights, and governance reforms in Jammu and Kashmir.
