In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing an impressive 6 kilograms at birth, marking one of the heaviest babies ever delivered at this institution.

The baby was born on 25th October 2025 at 1:20 PM to a diabetic mother, later developing severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes of life. Spotting the critical condition, the medical team promptly admitted the newborn to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for specialized management and monitoring.

Given the newborn’s large-for-gestational-age status and the alarming signs of respiratory compromise, the NICU team initiated specialized neonatal respiratory support immediately. Medical professionals closely observed several parameters including respiratory effort, blood sugar levels, oxygen saturation, temperature, and neurological activity.

Over the ensuing days, the baby showed significant improvement, allowing the medical team to gradually wean off respiratory support. For the final 72 hours prior to discharge, the infant maintained stable independent breathing, adequate oxygenation, and effective temperature regulation, registering no incidences of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation. After demonstrating consistent clinical stability, the newborn was discharged in good health, with routine follow-up advised.

This successful management of a challenging case occurred under the proficient guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of Pediatrics, along with faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. They received vital support from the committed team of senior and junior residents.

Dedicated appreciation also goes to the nursing and paramedical staff at GMC Doda. Their vigilant monitoring and compassionate care played an essential role in the newborn’s recovery.

This notable achievement underscores the growing expertise and collaborative spirit within the Department of Pediatrics, GMC Doda. It reflects the institution’s steadfast commitment to delivering high-quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children in the region.
