In a significant move to bolster sports infrastructure and youth development in Jammu and Kashmir, Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, met with Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, in New Delhi today. This meeting focused on enhancing athletic excellence and promoting youth engagement in the region.

Sharma presented a comprehensive memorandum to Mandaviya, emphasizing the Jammu and Kashmir Government’s goal to transform the Union Territory into a dynamic hub for sports and youth empowerment. The memorandum outlines key proposals for infrastructure development, athlete welfare, and grassroots participation. These initiatives align with the National Sports Policy 2025 and the J&K Sports Policy 2022.

During the discussions, Sharma highlighted the need for enhanced support from the Union Government to accelerate the development of world-class facilities. He specifically pointed to the importance of establishing the National Winter Sports Centre of Excellence in Gulmarg. He solicited assistance for modernizing district stadiums to incorporate all-weather infrastructure and called for sports amenities at the panchayat level to guarantee equitable access for rural youth.

Moreover, Sharma advocated for the expansion of Khelo India grassroots programs. He suggested increasing scholarship amounts and extending financial aid for athletes. The integration of sports science and physiotherapy into training systems was also a focal point of the discussions. Additionally, he proposed the promotion of public-private partnerships (PPP) to ensure effective management of sports infrastructure.

To foster sports-linked tourism and enhance global exposure, Sharma proposed hosting international winter sports events in Gulmarg. This initiative aims to position Jammu and Kashmir as a premier global destination for winter and adventure sports.

In a critical financial request, Sharma urged the early release of ₹103.82 crore under the Khelo India scheme for the completion of crucial sports infrastructure projects crucial to developing local talent.

Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya responded positively to Sharma’s proposals, assuring that a dedicated policy for promoting rural sports will soon be developed. He committed to providing essential funds for sports equipment to support various ongoing and upcoming initiatives aimed at uplifting sports in Jammu and Kashmir.

This high-level meeting is a step toward achieving a significant milestone in nurturing athletic talent and enhancing the sports ecosystem in Jammu and Kashmir, thereby fostering community engagement and inspiring the youth.
