Good People Shying Away From Politics: Ex-President Kovind

Former President Ramnath Kovind voiced concern over the lack of engagement from ‘good people’ in politics, urging youth to actively contribute to India’s political landscape during the Vijayadashmi rally at Reshimbagh ground on Thursday.

As the chief guest at the annual event organized by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Kovind expressed the need for principled individuals to play a greater role in governance. He stated, “Good people are shying away from politics, and this trend needs to change,” highlighting the critical role that responsible leadership plays in a functioning democracy.

Kovind drew inspiration from influential leaders such as RSS founder Keshav Baliram Hedgewar and social reformer Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, acknowledging their impact on his life. He remarked, “I was inspired by the values of national unity and social harmony shared by Dr. Ambedkar and Dr. Hedgewar. There is no casteism and discrimination in RSS,” emphasizing the importance of inclusivity.

The former president reiterated that understanding society’s complexities through Hedgewar’s thoughts has significantly shaped his political outlook. He encouraged young Indians to participate actively in political affairs, stating, “Politics needs fresh perspectives. I urge the youth to take the initiative and contribute. This is essential for the evolution of our democracy.”

In addition to promoting youth engagement in politics, Kovind announced that he is writing a book titled ‘Triumph of the Indian Republic,’ which reflects his experiences and insights on the progress of India’s governance.

The Vijayadashmi rally also commemorated the centenary celebrations of the RSS, an organization founded by Hedgewar on Dussehra in 1925. The gathering attracted significant attention as it marked a century of the Sangh’s commitment to promoting social harmony and national integrity.

The discussion on political participation dovetails with a growing sentiment among many Indian citizens regarding the disengagement of moral leaders from politics. Kovind’s impassioned appeal aims to rekindle interest among young individuals, particularly those with a track record of ethical behavior and community service.

Experts suggest that political apathy among capable individuals, particularly from educated backgrounds, could lead to a governance vacuum that political parties are often hesitant to fill. In light of Kovind’s statements, there is renewed discourse on how political forums can be made more inviting to those who wish to make a difference.

As the nation navigates complex social and political issues, the call from the former president resonates with the public. His entreaty for good people to step into politics aligns with a national narrative seeking transparency, accountability, and a rejuvenated public trust in elected representatives.
