Gwangju (South Korea), September 27: In a stunning display of skill and determination, 18-year-old Indian armless archer Sheetal Devi made history by winning gold in the women’s compound individual category at the Para World Archery Championships on Saturday. She defeated Turkey’s world No. 1, Oznur Cure Girdi, with a final score of 146-143, marking a significant milestone in her career.

Sheetal, the only armless competitor at the championships, uses her feet and chin to shoot arrows. This recent victory adds to her impressive medal tally during the event, where she secured three medals in total.

Before clinching the individual gold, Sheetal collaborated with fellow archer Toman Kumar to win a bronze medal in the mixed team compound event. The Indian duo defeated Great Britain’s Jodie Grinham and Nathan MacQueen 152-149, showcasing their teamwork and skill.

In the open team event, Sheetal and Sarita faced Turkey in the finals, finishing with a silver medal after a hard-fought battle. Their journey throughout the championships has resonated with fans and athletes, portraying the spirit of resilience.

The final match saw a close competition as both archers showcased their intimacy with the sport. The first end ended in a tie at 29, but Sheetal quickly took control by scoring three perfect 10s in the second end, leading 30-27.

The tight contest continued as both archers remained neck-and-neck. The third end was once again tied at 29, while a slight dip in form saw Sheetal score 28 in the fourth end, allowing Girdi to catch up. However, Sheetal managed to maintain a slight two-point advantage going into the last end, leading 116-114.

In a climactic finish, Sheetal sealed her victory with a perfect final end, scoring three consecutive 10s. Earlier, she had asserted her dominance in the semifinals by beating Jodie Grinham, delivering a commanding performance with a score of 145-140.

Critically, this gold medal win allowed Sheetal to avenge her loss to Girdi during the 2023 Pilsen World Championships, where she suffered a narrow defeat with a score of 140-138.

In the women’s open team final, the Indian pair began with high spirits and an early lead, scoring 38 to Turkey’s 37 in the first end. They produced exceptional shots as well, securing three 10s from their first four arrows.

However, the Turkish team regrouped in the second end, scoring three perfect 10s and overtaking the Indians, leveling the scores at 76-76. As the competition intensified, nerves affected the Indian pair, leading to a dip in their scores in the third end. Despite their efforts, they managed only 36 points.

Turkey, with consistent shooting, took a marginal lead into the final end. In a decisive moment, Girdi and Un delivered a near-perfect performance, scoring 39 points against India’s faltering total of 36, ultimately clinching the gold medal.

Sheetal’s extraordinary journey at the Para World Archery Championship signifies more than just medals; it represents relentless dedication and the ability to overcome obstacles. Her story inspires countless individuals, illuminating the path of sports excellence despite physical challenges.

As para sports continue to gain visibility in India, Sheetal Devi stands as a testament to what can be achieved through perseverance and passion. National pride grows as athletes like Sheetal continue to shine on international platforms.
