September 27, 2023: India revealed that Pakistan’s military “pleaded” for a cessation of fighting during Operation Sindoor, asserting no space exists for third-party intervention between New Delhi and Islamabad.
The declaration came from Petal Gahlot, First Secretary in India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, following statements made by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. In his address, Sharif credited former U.S. President Donald Trump for averting potential war between the two nuclear-armed nations.
Gahlot emphasized, “This Assembly witnessed absurd theatrics from the Prime Minister of Pakistan, who continues to glorify terrorism that is central to their foreign policy.”
Sharif asserted Pakistan’s readiness for a “composite, comprehensive, and result-oriented” dialogue with India concerning unresolved issues, while also criticizing New Delhi regarding the Kashmir situation.
“We recognize President Trump’s significant contribution to fostering peace in our region. Pakistan went as far as nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize,” stated Sharif. “This recognition is essential, reflecting his commitment to peace.”
Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, 2023, targeted terror infrastructure in Pakistan and areas occupied by Pakistan, a direct response to the Pahalgam terror attack that had occurred on April 22, resulting in the deaths of 26 civilians. India claims that the understanding regarding the cessation of hostilities arose from direct talks between the Directors General of Military Operations from both sides.
Experts echo Gahlot’s sentiments, highlighting that dialogue must focus on factual events rather than theatrical rhetoric at international platforms. This incident underscores the continuing tensions and the complexity surrounding Indo-Pak relations.
As the world watches, the narrative over peace and conflict in South Asia continues to unfold, drawing attentiveness to the critical need for dialogue rooted in transparency and mutual respect.
