Defence Minister Rajnath Singh lauded the MiG-21 fighter jet on Friday, celebrating its legacy as a national pride at the decommissioning ceremony in Chandigarh Air Force Station. The MiG-21, a symbol of India’s military strength, served over 60 years, showcasing the robust ties between India and Russia.

Singh reflected on the distinguished journey of the MiG-21, expressing gratitude for its service to the nation. He noted, “The mighty machine picked up the burden of the country’s security on its wings for decades, and shaped our confidence and strategy.”

The decommissioning marked the end of an era for the iconic MiG-21, which had been a crucial part of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) combat fleet since the 1960s. This farewell did not only signify the retirement of an aircraft but also the conclusion of a chapter woven with tales of bravery and skill.

During the ceremony, Singh remembered the unwavering valour of armed forces, crediting the MiG-21 with significant contributions during pivotal historical events. “Being among you, I feel emotions of pride and gratitude,” he stated, articulating the cultural weight the aircraft carries in Indian military history.

He remarked, “This farewell is of our collective memories and national pride, of this journey of courage, sacrifice, and excellence.” The MiG-21, with over 11,500 units produced globally, remains a testament to its unmatched credibility and multi-dimensional capability.

The aircraft’s legacy features prominently in several historical wartimes, including the decisive actions of the 1971 war with Pakistan, the Kargil conflict in 1999, and the 2019 air strikes in Balakot. Singh recalled, “No such occasion transpired without MiG-21 providing tremendous power to our armed forces.”

Specific anecdotes from the 1971 war illustrate the aircraft’s pivotal role. Singh reminisced, “On the day MiG-21 attacked the Dhaka Governor House under adverse conditions, the outcome of the battle was determined that day.” He emphasized the importance of the MiG-21 in raising the national flag’s honour during historic missions.

Moreover, Singh addressed the MiG-21 from a philosophical lens, connecting its service to the ancient traditions of India. “Our culture teaches that respect should be given not just to people but also to all elements contributing to our lives,” he explained. He articulated the emotional connection many Indians forge with the aircraft, likening it to a family member.

As the minister acknowledged the MiG-21’s journey over decades, he asserted, “This aircraft has shaped our confidence, strengthened our strategy, and supported our position on the global stage.” He reaffirmed the aircraft’s relevance, clarifying misconceptions about its age. The MiG-21s currently operational were an average of 40 years old, which aligns with international standards for military aviation.

Singh concluded by expressing profound respect for the MiG-21 during its decommissioning. He reiterated that its retirement should be viewed not merely as a military ceremony but as part of India’s broader cultural tradition of honoring its heroes, both human and mechanical.
