The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), successfully launched the Agni-Prime missile on September 14, 2023, from a rail-based mobile launcher system. This launch signifies a major leap in India’s defense capabilities, positioning the country among select nations with advanced missile systems.

The Agni-Prime is an intermediate-range ballistic missile designed to cover distances up to 2,000 km. According to a Defence Ministry statement, it comes equipped with advanced features that enhance its operational effectiveness.

The innovative rail-based mobile launcher showed its capabilities during the launch by enabling cross-country mobility without pre-conditions. This ensures that the missile can be launched quickly and with reduced visibility, a significant advantage in tactical situations.

The launch, which was meticulously planned, involved tracking the missile’s trajectory through various ground stations. This approach resulted in a successful mission that met all stipulated objectives, highlighting the operational readiness of this cutting-edge system.

Senior scientists from DRDO and officers from the Strategic Forces Command closely monitored the launch, underscoring the collaboration between various branches of India’s armed forces.

Prior to this launch, the road-mobile variant of the Agni-P was successfully inducted into the armed services after extensive flight trials. The successful testing of the Agni-Prime adds to India’s comprehensive deterrent forces.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the achievement, stating, “Congratulations to DRDO, SFC, and the armed forces on successfully testing the Intermediate Range Agni-Prime missile.” He emphasized that the flight test elevates India’s status among nations capable of deploying canisterized launch systems from rail networks.

Singh elaborated further on the missile’s potential: “This next-generation missile allows for quick mobility and launch with minimal visibility, essential in modern warfare.”

Adding to the accolades, the Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO applauded all teams involved for their dedication and prowess in completing this milestone.

The advancements represented by the Agni-Prime system reflect India’s commitment to enhancing its defense technologies and ensuring readiness in a complex global landscape. This successful launch enhances national security and underscores the importance of indigenous defense production capabilities.
