Gulmarg, Sep 18: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah called on tourism stakeholders to collaborate and support the government’s promotional initiatives aimed at revitalizing the tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir.
During a recent closed-door meeting held at the newly inaugurated Gulmarg Convention Centre, Abdullah expressed concern over the lack of support from travel agents and industry players. He believes that without a unified stance, tourism cannot be restored to its former glory.
The Importance of Unity in Tourism
Omar Abdullah, who oversees the tourism portfolio, emphasized that the region’s economy heavily relies on tourism and related sectors. “The industry cannot flourish without the combined effort of both public and private stakeholders,” he stated.
During the meeting, he pointed out several initiatives implemented by his administration, including a cycling festival in Pahalgam and a promotional drive initiated after the April 22 terror attack that tragically took the lives of 26 tourists. Despite these efforts, Abdullah feels unsupported.
Concerns Over Political Backing
One of Abdullah’s main frustrations is the lack of defense from industry players during times of political scrutiny. The critics have targeted tourism policies, and Abdullah believed that stakeholders should have rallied to support his administration.
“When opposition parties challenge our tourism initiatives, it’s essential that we stand united,” he asserted. His disappointment stems from his observation that some directives from his government fail to reach all stakeholders, leading to a perception of “selective leakage” of information, which could cause misunderstandings.
Future of Hotel Leases Under Review
Abdullah warned stakeholders that hotel lease agreements across key tourist destinations—Jammu, Katra, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, Srinagar, and Gulmarg—will undergo a thorough review. He foresees potential consequences if stakeholders do not engage actively in discussions about the region’s tourism strategy.
“We must ensure that the future of our beloved Gulmarg and surrounding areas is secure, and that means every stakeholder must play their part,” he urged.
Addressing Misunderstandings Surrounding Tourism Promotions
Moreover, Abdullah expressed discontent with the criticism surrounding an upcoming tourism promotion visit to Paris. He clarified that neither he nor his advisor, Nasir Aslam Wani, would attend the trip, as it would be represented by officials and travel associations. He believes that understanding and awareness surrounding such promotions are crucial to garnering support.
In conclusion, Abdullah’s call for a unified effort highlights the pressing need for collaboration in the tourism sector. Stakeholders must recognize that the revitalization of tourism depends on their participation and support of government initiatives.
