In a move aimed at bolstering citizen privacy and improving cybersecurity, the Central Government announced on Monday that email verification through a One-Time Password (OTP) will become mandatory for all online Right to Information (RTI) applications starting June 16, 2025.

According to an official statement released by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the initiative is designed to enhance data protection standards and safeguard users’ personal information on the government’s digital platforms.

“To enhance citizen privacy and data security, and to strengthen the portal’s cybersecurity framework, email verification via OTP will be implemented for all RTI requests starting Monday, June 16, 2025,” read a message posted on the RTI portal.

📌 What You Need to Know

  • New Rule: Email verification via OTP becomes mandatory
  • Effective Date: Monday, June 16, 2025
  • Applies to: All users submitting RTI applications via www.rtionline.gov.in
  • Purpose: Improved cybersecurity and user privacy

About the RTI Portal

The RTI Online Portal enables citizens to:

  • File Right to Information applications
  • Submit first and second appeals
  • Track the status of applications and appeals

The platform has been a vital tool for transparency, allowing individuals to seek information from various public authorities under the RTI Act, 2005.

Why It Matters

Experts see the move as part of a broader strategy by the Centre to modernize digital governance infrastructure while addressing concerns over data breaches and unauthorized access.

“Strengthening digital trust is essential. Mandatory OTP verification adds a layer of protection that aligns with global best practices,” said cybersecurity analyst Priya Mehta.

🛡️ Citizens are advised to ensure they have a valid and active email ID linked to their RTI portal account before the implementation date to avoid any disruption in the filing process.
