IPL 2025: Struggling Mumbai Indians Hope for Bumrah Brilliance Against Resurgent Sunrisers Hyderabad

As the Indian Premier League 2025 heads into its crucial middle phase, Mumbai Indians (MI) will look to regain momentum when they take on Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in what promises to be a high-octane clash at the Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

For MI, the spotlight will firmly be on ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah. Returning from a lengthy injury layoff, the speedster has struggled to find his usual rhythm. While his spell against Royal Challengers Bengaluru showed glimpses of control, he was expensive in the following match against Delhi Capitals, conceding 44 runs and failing to land his trademark yorkers.

With the fiery SRH batting unit boasting names like Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, and Heinrich Klaasen, Bumrah’s form could very well dictate MI’s fortunes.

Adding to MI’s concerns is the prolonged slump of former captain Rohit Sharma. The veteran opener has managed just 56 runs in five innings, averaging a dismal 11.20. His continued struggles at the top have left MI reliant on Suryakumar Yadav and the emerging Tilak Varma to carry the batting load.

Tilak, after a poor outing against Lucknow Super Giants, has bounced back in style with blistering knocks of 56 and 59. Naman Dhir has also proven to be a reliable contributor, both with the bat in the death overs and in the field, where his athleticism helped secure a vital win against Delhi.

SRH Seek Consistency After Breaking Losing Streak

Sunrisers Hyderabad, too, have had an up-and-down campaign, currently ninth on the table with two wins from six matches. While their net run rate (-1.24) keeps them below MI (+0.10), both teams are level on points, making Thursday’s clash a crucial decider in the race for the playoffs.

However, SRH will take confidence from their recent emphatic win over Punjab Kings, where they chased down a mammoth total with ease. Abhishek Sharma led the charge with a stunning 141 off 55 balls, while Head, Klaasen, and Kishan all contributed with the bat — suggesting the top order is finally hitting its stride.

Abhishek, in particular, will relish his return to Wankhede, a ground where he previously hammered England for 135 in a T20I earlier this year.

Ishan Kishan, facing his former franchise at his old home ground, will also have a point to prove.

Wankhede’s High-Scoring Tradition Continues

Traditionally a batting paradise, the Wankhede surface promises bounce and carry, often leading to tall scores. Bowlers will need to be precise with their lines and lengths, with spinners and pacers alike having little room for error.

With both sides showing glimpses of brilliance amidst inconsistency, this encounter could prove decisive in shaping the bottom half of the points table.

Mumbai Indians: Hardik Pandya (c), Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Naman Dhir, Ryan Rickelton (wk), Jasprit Bumrah, Arjun Tendulkar, Mitchell Santner, Reece Topley, Karn Sharma.
