Jayant Patil Mocks Media Speculation Over BJP Allegiance at Event with Nitin Gadkari

Maharashtra NCP (SP) Chief Jayant Patil on Monday took a dig at the media over speculation that he might be joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), as he attended an event alongside Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. The remarks came during the inauguration of a hostel building at the Rajarambapu Institute of Technology (RIT) in Islampur, Sangli district.

In a sarcastic tone, Patil urged journalists not to publish misleading reports suggesting that Gadkari might be joining the NCP (SP). “I request you not to publish reports claiming that Gadkari is joining the NCP (SP). The credibility of news reports determines the stature of journalism, and I leave that to you. Recently, some reports about me switching sides were published and discussed at the state and national levels, which saddened me,” Patil remarked.

Patil Criticizes Media’s Perception of Political Alliances

Patil criticized the media for failing to understand that political leaders from opposing parties could come together for a common cause. He mentioned that influential figures like J.R.D. Tata had previously visited the institute, emphasizing that the event was not a political platform. “This is not a platform for politics,” he stated, urging journalists to focus on the broader picture of cooperation.

He thanked Gadkari for accepting the invitation to be the chief guest, highlighting the Union Minister’s significant contributions to India’s infrastructure development. Patil praised Gadkari’s efforts in boosting the country’s road transport and highways sector.

Gadkari Responds, Stresses Friendship Over Politics

In his address, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari responded to Patil’s comments, advising him not to pay too much attention to media reports. He stressed the need to redefine the nature of politics, saying, “Politics isn’t just about power. It is about social service. In Maharashtra, politics has traditionally been limited to elections. Once elections are over, political differences should also end.”

Gadkari emphasized that his presence at the event was due to his longstanding friendship with Patil, rather than political affiliations. “The event should not be viewed through a political lens. I attended it purely because of my friendship with Patil. There may be ideological differences, but there is no scope for differences of the heart,” Gadkari asserted.

Despite his past involvement in campaigning for the BJP in Sangli, Gadkari reiterated that once elections are over, political differences should cease. “Politics is not about electioneering alone; it’s about serving the people,” he added.

Patil’s Role in Islampur

Jayant Patil, who represents Islampur as an MLA, continues to be an influential figure in Maharashtra politics. His comments reflect his commitment to focusing on development work and public service rather than engaging in political gossip.

The event concluded on a note of cooperation and shared goals, with both Patil and Gadkari emphasizing the importance of putting the needs of the people above political rivalry.
