Bihar Politics in Focus: Nitish Kumar’s Cryptic Response to Lalu Prasad’s Offer

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday left the political sphere abuzz with his cryptic response to RJD president Lalu Prasad’s overture regarding rejoining the INDIA bloc. When asked about Prasad’s offer, Kumar simply replied, “Kya bol rahe hain? (What are you saying?),” leaving journalists and political observers speculating about his intentions.

Prasad, a prominent figure of the opposition INDIA bloc and father of Tejashwi Yadav, had earlier stated, “Our doors are open (for Nitish). He should also unbolt his gates. This would facilitate movement of people from both sides.” This remark, made during an interview, gained traction amidst the BJP’s projected stance on Kumar as the face of the NDA for the upcoming assembly elections.

Tejashwi Yadav Downplays Remarks

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav sought to downplay his father’s comments, attributing them to media curiosity. “What would he do if people like you keep coming to him with the same question? Whatever he said must have been aimed at putting an end to your curiosity,” Yadav remarked.

On Wednesday, Yadav had made waves by predicting the “departure” of the NDA government in Bihar during the new year. When approached at the swearing-in ceremony of Arif Mohammad Khan as the new governor, Yadav reiterated his stance but refrained from delving deeper into Prasad’s comments.

Nitish Kumar’s Silence Fuels Speculation

Kumar, flanked by Governor Khan and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary of the BJP, refrained from addressing Prasad’s remarks in detail. When pressed on the longevity of the current government, Governor Khan intervened, advising the media to focus on the day’s celebratory occasion. Kumar maintained his silence, fueling further political intrigue.

NDA Stands United, Says Lalan Singh

Union Minister and former JD(U) president Rajiv Ranjan Singh “Lalan” dismissed any potential rift within the NDA. “The NDA is strong. JD(U) and BJP are united. It is a free society, and anybody can say whatever they please. It is for Lalu ji to elaborate on his own statements,” Singh asserted.

Singh’s remarks came amidst rumors of his prior closeness to Lalu Prasad during Kumar’s hiatus from the NDA. However, he reaffirmed his commitment to the current alliance.

Backdrop and Implications

This political exchange comes at a critical juncture, with assembly polls looming less than a year away. While Prasad’s comments hint at potential political realignments, Kumar’s reticent approach keeps his cards close to the chest. Observers are left to interpret whether the CM’s response reflects disinterest, political strategy, or mere deflection.

As Bihar’s political landscape evolves, all eyes remain on the unfolding dynamics between the RJD and JD(U), with both sides playing a high-stakes game ahead of the elections.
