The Army’s Northern Command today held wreath-laying ceremonies at multiple locations across Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh to mark Vijay Diwas, commemorating India’s decisive victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war that led to the creation of Bangladesh as an independent nation.

The Udhampur-based Northern Command honored the occasion with a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at the Dhruva War Memorial. The event was led by General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Lt Gen M V Suchindra Kumar.

“Lt Gen Kumar interacted with veterans who continue to inspire us through their legacy of courage and dedication,” the Northern Command stated in a post on X.

Tributes Across Jammu and Ladakh

In Jammu, the Tiger Division paid homage at the ‘Balidan Stambh’ war memorial. The Deputy General Officer Commanding of the division laid a wreath at the eternal flame, accompanied by a ceremonial guard of honor.

“This event was held to honor the supreme sacrifices of our brave soldiers during the 1971 India-Pakistan war, which concluded in just 13 days with a historic victory for India,” a defense spokesperson said.

In Ladakh, a commemorative ceremony was organized at the ‘Hall of Fame’ in Leh. Major General Dinesh Kumar Singh, Chief of Staff of the Fire and Fury Corps, led the tributes by laying a wreath. The event was attended by officers, junior commissioned officers, and other ranks from the Fire and Fury Corps, Air Force Station Leh, and other units.

Legacy and Resolve

The ceremonies concluded with a pledge to uphold the legacy of the fallen heroes and a reaffirmed commitment to safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty.

Vijay Diwas, observed annually on December 16, celebrates the valor and sacrifice of the Indian armed forces, who defeated the Pakistan Army in 1971, culminating in the birth of Bangladesh.
