Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley on the sidelines of the India-CARICOM Summit, expressing gratitude for being conferred the Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados Award.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi shared, “Had a very good meeting with Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley of Barbados. Our talks covered areas such as science and technology, healthcare, education, climate change, and agriculture.”
He further stated, “I am grateful to the Government and people of Barbados for conferring the Honorary Order of Freedom of Barbados Award. This honor is dedicated to the people of India.”
Barbados PM Mia Amor Mottley described PM Modi’s visit as a “historic moment” for CARICOM nations, emphasizing the significance of the India-CARICOM Summit. Speaking to the media, she noted, “It is a historic moment for most of us in CARICOM to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the level of Heads of Government.”
PM Mottley also recalled their earlier interactions at the UN General Assembly, highlighting the growing strength of ties between the two regions.
India and Barbados share a close and cordial relationship, engaging actively through the UN, Commonwealth, NAM, and other international platforms. A statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs acknowledged Barbados’s consistent support for India’s candidature on multilateral platforms, including UN elections.
Additionally, the Indian community in Barbados, numbering approximately 3,000, continues to play a significant role in strengthening bilateral ties, with many having acquired local nationality.
